Time to Make the Healthy Donuts?

June 3, 2011

The term healthy donuts is an oxymoron and blasphemy, as donuts were never meant to be healthy. Still, the nutritionist in me decided to seek out the healthiest possible donuts for this day that honors the deep-fried, sugar and gluten laced treat.

Dandelion Donuts
A definite west coast inspired delight. Stevia replaces the sugar, and it's also vegan. The twist is the use of dandelion flowers, making this a most unique donut.

Whole Food Fermented Donuts
Wow, a donut made with kefir and raw honey! It's easy to make gluten free, just sub your favorite GF flour. Try and not get amped up about the lard. Believe it or not, it's a whole food, which happens to be  far healthier than margarine or Crisco. If you prefer not to eat pork products, you can try organic veggie shortening. Butter might work, but I haven't actually tried this recipe.

Gluten Free Cake Donuts
The Gluten Free Goddess offers this recipe which still isn't health food, but its far better for you than your average donut.

Donut Muffins
The sugar content is greatly reduced and can be made even healthier by using rapadura or sustainable palm sugar.
