At this point, anyone who’s not a mushroom forager in Ithaca must by dying for some sun. It’s been raining almost around the clock – a steady pitter-patter on the tin roof of our home, soaking the earth and flooding the streets.

I want to take a minute to say how wonderful I think Quinoa is. I make a batch with varied flavors every week and I eat on it for lunch and snacks all week long. I’ve always loved rice, but have found more limited health benefits considering the carbs that come with it.

Once in a business dinner party we were talking with an American couple. They asked me about Turkish cuisine, our famous foods, favorites, etc. They wanted to know Turkish comfort foods.

I got the inspiration for this salad at Roadhouse in Davenport, Ca. Just a few miles from us here in Santa Cruz. It’s a gorgeous drive along the coast highway through the organic farms and vinyards. If your ever in this area here’s a great article listing some of our favorite places eat at and visit.

He’s always wanted to create a perfect NY style pizza crust but no matter how he tried, the crust was never quite right. Well, folks, the perfect crust has arrived! It was not without extreme measures, trust me, ha. Many of you have asked for the recipe, and I’ll do the best I can but let me just say, this is not for the faint of heart!

As I sit here eating lunch, it dawned on my that I never posted my eggplant pizza. How could I deprive my audience with these wonderful mouth-watering images? This was a super easy weeknight dinner for us. Dough courtesy of Whole Foods and the rest was prepared within an hour. Roasting the halves of several plum tomatoes in the oven on high tossed with olive oil for about 30 or so minutes.

I recently visited my aunt in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. For the last twenty years, she’s lived in a tiny house in the middle of what is now a shrinking forest. Air conditioning, in my aunt’s world, is limited to the opening of windows and central heating? Try a fireplace.

Back in my callow twenties (and even into my thirties), I was one of those annoyingly punctual people who submitted essays three days early, was always the first one at the restaurant, or who arrived with 30 minutes to spare at the dentist. I’d cast a scowling glance at friends who arrived late for our meetings, implying that their behavior was both inconsiderate and an indication of how little they valued me and my time. (How on earth did they put up with me. . .?).

Every once and a while a magical thing happens in the foodie world. Someone tries a recipe, adds their own twist and posts it. Then someone reads the post and does the same. And another. Before you know it there is a convoluted trail of foodies putting their spin on an already delicious recipe. Like the passing of a ritual torch, it is time I bestow to you this delicious, possibly perfect brownie recipe. This isn’t the most intricate trail I’ve seen in the foodie world, but it’s a fun one, so let’s follow it anyways.

I popped into Giovanni’s the other day to see what was new and to feel inspired. The place is pretty much food retail heaven for me. I enjoy chatting to either Nic or Giovanni who are almost always around with friendly advice and ideas about what to make with their delicious produce.

My seasonal food clock is somewhat ahead of schedule as I’m already craving foods usually enjoyed after the thermometer drops a few degrees, but I didn’t feel any guilt devouring this dish. This braised chicken defines comfort food for me. This is what I want when the weather outside is not too nice, when there’s earthquakes, hurricanes or godzilla at your front door, and this is what I want sometimes for no reason at all. It’s simple and deeply satisfying French country cooking. This is the kind of dish you can expect to be served on a checkered tablecloth, along with a glass of wine and a loaf of bread, as you travel through the country side in Burgundy and make a pit stop at a local auberge.

It’s been too hot to do anything all that strenuous, or so I tell myself, so I’ve opted to enjoy the heat. To let my skin soak up the sun, to let the humidity have its way with my hair…and, to get out of the kitchen. There’s no point of slaving over a hot stove when I could be savouring a mojito with good company, is there? That’s where this recipe for Cold Sesame Noodle Salad comes in. It’s an adaptation of a recipe from Karen at Gourmet Recipes for One, and it’s ideal for days like these.

I have two kinds of mint in my backyard. They have grown so much that I had to trim some of them to prevent them from spreading to the next planter. You can make chutney out of it, rice out of it, but I was in the mood for something else. Add it to the dilemma of what to do with the sourdough cast-off, these were made. I have made sourdough skillet pitas before. All I did was adding the spices, making them a bit thinner.
