One Ingredient, Five Ways: Turmeric

February 25, 2016

Turmeric is making a name for itself in 2016 outside of curry mixes.  This bright orange spice is part of the rhizome family (like ginger and galangal) and can be used fresh or dried.  On its own, turmeric has a bitter flavor with notes of orange and ginger but adds dimension and balance when paired with other sweet or savory spices.  Also, turmeric has been long revered for its medicinal properties especially because it is rich in antioxidants and contains inflammatory compounds.  This collection of recipes is just a snapshot of the various ways turmeric can be incorporated into your everyday diet. You can enjoy it in a smoothie with dates and bananas, as a marinade for beef or mixed into your cake batter for a dash of spice.
