Indian Gooseberry

About
The bitter, sour fruit of the Indian gooseberry tree, native to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. A popular preparation method in India is to soak the fruit in salted water flavored with turmeric.
It is especially used in South India where the fruit is pickled. It is also eaten raw or mixed in with various cooked dishes. In the Andhra Pradesh province they use amla in a lentil dish called dal. In Northern India they make amle ka muabbah, a more sweet dish where the amla is soaked in sugar syrup. This is then eaten as a dessert.
