The British strawberry season started in April under glass. The openair fruit disappears towards the end of next month. Meanwhile Fragaria vesca the wild strawberry; has just appeared. Look for it in hedgerows. The most ubiquitous 'supermarket variety is Elsanta which couples decent flavour with longevity and an attractive appearance. Pick your own for maximum freshness.
