Channa masala is as varied recipe as you will find. Every family probably cooks it differently. Do a nutritional analysis on your favorite one.

Channa is chick-peas. This means: high in protein, but needs to be combined with a grain or milk product to be complete protein. It's a complex carbohydrate, leading to slow and gentle rises in blood sugar, which is safe for diabetics, and are filling because they have lots of soluble fiber. It's low in fat, and any fat would be unsaturated, which is relatively healthy. The "masala" part of Channa Masala, involves spices, which generally have only trace amounts of nutrients, plus yogurt, which in Indian cooking is full-fat. If you substitute lower-fat yogurt, it might break up in the cooking process, looking curdled and unappetizing. Channa Masala is a healthy, nutritional, filling vegetarian entree or side dish for any meal.
