European Chestnut

About

The European Chestnut is the edible seed of the chestnut tree, which is native to Southeast Europe. The nuts have a sweet flavor when roasted and are made into puddings, cakes and other desserts. They are also ground into flour and used in bread, cereal and as a thickening agent.

Preparation and Use

To peel chestnuts prior to cooking, slit and place in a pan of boiling water and boil for 10 minutes. Keep the chestnuts in the hot water until ready to peel as it is easier to remove the shells and skins when they are warm.

Conserving and Storing

Keep fresh chestnuts in the fridge in the vegetable drawer when they can be kept for up to six months.
