A chemical Chinese farmers have been using to make their crops grow faster is causing watermelons to explode, turning farms into minefields.
The exploding watermelons are from China's eastern Jiangsu province. The watermelon bombs look normal at first glance, but will slowly begin to split at the top and within a couple of minutes will explode. One watermelon exploded as an elderly woman was cutting into the fruit.
People who eat the exploding watermelons generally experienced digestive problems. It seems unclear what the long-term effects might be from exposure to the chemical.
This is just one more food safety catastrophe in China in a long list including poisoned milk and glow in the dark pork.
