Walmart Tests Grocery Delivery System

April 25, 2011

National retailer Walmart has begun testing a grocery delivery service at a store location in San Jose, California. The program, called 'Walmart To Go,' allows customers to select groceries that will be delivered to their homes for fees starting at just $5.

Walmart has been expanding online shopping options for several years now. A program that allows customers to order products online for in-store pickup has proved quite successful. Other grocery delivery services exist from companies like Safeway and Peapod (from parent company Giant Food), Fresh Direct and AmazonFresh.

Customers select their items from mainly prepackaged items. Staff prepare the order in tote bags, which are then scheduled for delivery in temperature-controlled trucks for the next day. Walmart is the nation's largest grocer with a 33 percent market share.

Do you think this plan will work?
