Famed Pizzeria Owner Stabbed in Brooklyn

April 15, 2011

Well-known owner Mark Iacono of Brooklyn's Lucali pizzeria was stabbed and severely injured during a brazen daytime attack. A vicious argument that witnesses described as "personal" preceded the stabbing in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood. Iacono was taken to Lutheran Medical Center with injuries to his legs, back and throat, but is currently in stable condition. Authorities quickly arrested a suspect— Benny Geritano— in the case after he went to another hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the struggle. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. Iacono's Lucali was once voted the best pizzeria in all of New York City by Zagat. GQ Magazine once named the pizzeria the second best in the entire country. Before the incident, Iacono was planning to open another restaurant in Manhattan. Iacono is pictured with one of the restaurant's signature pizzas in the photograph above, which appeared in the New York Daily News.
