One sure sign that you're in a Vietnamese bakery is the fragrant aroma of fresh pandan waffles, made to order in a flash--hot off the iron, and invariably just in time for you to enjoy as you wait for your banh mi to be stuffed with thit nuong, pate, and pickled vegetables. Pandan is an extremely common flavoring herb with the aroma of vanilla and coconut and is often used to flavor many desserts, and goes particularly well with coconut.

For today's post, I was on a mission to give you new reasons to try popcorn. If you aren't making popcorn at home, read this earlier post on making it at home and caramel popcorn. I was, and still am, suprised to learn how many people had never made popcorn on the stove. The sounds, smell and process of homemade popcorn is truly one of life's simple pleasures.

Fresh onion rolls, no problem. These onion rolls are light, tender, and perfect for sandwiches. Sliced bread is very nice, but sometimes it's more special to have sandwiches on a roll. Here's a recipe for a dozen warm, delicious onion rolls that you can have ready by lunchtime.

Unlike soups or stews, risotto is one of those dishes that doesn’t really reheat gracefully. There was nothing appealing about these leftover containers of pale orange glop. Tip two: the Italians have a trick for this stuff. And it’s a crowd-pleaser with a crispy, greasy crust.

Winter is the time for boozy desserts and while I am not a huge fan of the rum soaked fruit cake, I do like a little liqueur in my desserts. Remember my recent cocktail cupcake fascination? Lately I have been playing around with the idea of Macarons flavored with sweet dessert wine, Tequila, Grand Mariner, Chocolate Liqueurs .. to create macaron margaritas, macaron mojitos and other mactails!

I love to have this cider during a cold day, and it usually starts around Thanksgiving. My sister in-law introduced me to this and that is when I fell in love with it.

It’s not really a recipe, as such…it’s more of a chemistry experiment that involves taking something a bit bland and mediocre, adding some other stuff to it and miraculously transforming it into something that’s way better than the sum of it’s parts.

I love vanilla! I don’t think there are many baking recipes that I make that don’t include it in some form. Vanilla extract and vanilla beans are such essential items in your Holiday Baking Spice Cabinet.

I know this is a crazy thing for a food blogger to say, but it explains why I had never previously tried making Parisian macarons, the tiny almond flour and meringue cookies that sandwich a filling of custard, jam or buttercream.

It was my birthday this week and I got some excellent presents. A Chasseur cast-iron pot, the Julia Child cookbooks and a set of knives were the main ones. I feel so spoilt! I've been trying to cook things in my new pot and chop lots of things with my new knives and I'm in heaven.

It's not the first time I eat something in a restaurant and instantly think "how can I recreate this at home?". In fact, this happens to me most of the time if I'm having something that is really nice, but at least seemingly easy to make at home. I had one of these moments after having the Burnt Orange Cafe's walnut bread with avocado, and I couldn't wait to try making my version of it.

Who knew squash could taste so good?! I tend to stick to certain kinds of squash this time of year including butternut, spaghetti and kabocha squash but I've been inspired to venture out and try other types such as acorn, delicata and hubbard this fall season.

I feel like I'm always looking for new ways to use random things taking up space in the fridge. Somehow when I'm at the store I forget that I'm not feeding an army and that Hank and I can only eat three times a day (much to our dismay), so we always seem to have different things accumulate.
