E Coli Alert: Jimmy John's Clover Sprouts

February 26, 2012

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported an outbreak of STEC O26 (Escherichia coli 026) across 6 states; Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan, Arkansas, and Wisconsin. The CDC believes the problem has been traced back to eating raw clover sprouts at Jimmy John's restaurants.

A total of 14 individuals have been reported as becoming ill, all female. Two of the people affected were hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported. It seems that the outbreak of illnesses started December 25 - February 7, 2012. Illnesses that have occurred after February 4, 2012 might not be reported yet, due the incubation period it takes for the symptoms to develop.
