Simply Delicious Lemonade

January 27, 2012
Most people think of lemonade as a summertime drink but lemon season is actually during the winter.  Lemonade is delicious any time of the year especially when you spice it up with other seasonal fruits and herbs.  Stock up on lemons while they are cheap and freeze the juice.  Then, with fresh lemon juice available all year around, you can make lemonade anytime you want.  Here is my favorite basic lemonade recipe.

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons Grated fresh lemon peel
2 cups Sugar
9 cups Water
6 Lemons, juice of, 1 cup

Directions:

Bring lemon peel, sugar, and water to a boil; boil for 30 seconds. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice. Cool to room temperature and store syrup in the refrigerator.

For each glass of lemonade use 1/4 cup of syrup with a cup of fizzy water or plain water. To make lemonade ice cubes, stir 2 tablespoons of syrup per cup of water and freeze as lemonade ice cubes.

One-half cup of white granulated sugar contains 387 calories, so two cups would have just less than 1600 calories. Using your syrup proportions, each drink of lemonade (ten ounces) would have over 150 calories. Ouch!
