BBQ Safety: Safe Thawing

May 25, 2011

Thawing meat for a BBQ can be a real drag. But to do it right, and safely, takes time. Before you just chuck the steaks on the counter to defrost, check out a few USDA guidelines on safe thawing.

Tips for Safe Thawing

1. Completely thaw meat and poultry before grilling so it cooks more evenly.

2. Use the refrigerator for slow, safe thawing.

3. For quicker thawing place the food in sealed packages in cold water. Make sure you change the water frequently, about every hour or so.

4. For even quicker thawing, you can microwave defrost if the food will be placed immediately on the grill.
