Last week, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different wine closures. However, beyond their effect on the wine itself, there are concerns about sustainability. The San Francisco Chronicle has taken a look at natural cork, screwcaps, and synthetic cork from an environmental point of view. Both natural cork and screwcaps are preferable as they can be recycled, and the article has some resources for finding recycling opportunities.
