Jump into fall with this applesauce cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. Comforting, sweet, and delicious, this cake is something the whole family can share and enjoy. The key to this recipe is to use unsweetened applesauce. If have homemade applesauce, even better. Applesauce cake makes for a perfect holiday dessert or can easily be devoured at your next family dinner.
Applesauce Cake with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting
For cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
1/2 cup walnuts (optional), toasted (see Tips), cooled, and chopped
5 ounces cream cheese, softened
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 cup confectioners sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F with rack in middle. Butter an 8- or 9-inch square cake pan.
Make frosting:Beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla with an electric mixer at high speed until fluffy.
