A squirrel is from the rodent family, and it's cousins include the chipmunks, prairie dogs, and woodchucks.
Squirrel is considered wild game in some parts of the US and the UK. Squirrel meat is moist and sweet, but is a little gamey. The taste is considered a cross between a lamb and a duck.They can be fried, braised, or stewed.
In 2006, the Save Our Squirrels campaign started in the UK, encouraging people to eat gray squirrels to protect their native red squirrel. Squirrel meat has to be cooked thoroughly to get the gamey taste out of it.
People are also advised not to eat the squirrels brain because they can cause Creutzfeld-Jakob disease - similar to Mad Cow disease, but only for humans.
