Fun Fact: Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana, Mexico.
The classic salad is typically attributed to Caesar Cardini, an Italian who emigrated to California with his brother, Alex, after World War I. According to a user post on The Kitchen Project, Caesar (the user's great-uncle) opened a restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico, to avoid post-war Prohibition. The first Caesar salad was supposedly served there.
Though the exact date of invention and inspiration are debatable, the Caesar salad eventually appeared in Los Angeles in 1946. And some even contest the idea that Caesar invented the salad, citing brother Alex as the true champion.
Will we ever know the truth? Probably not. But we can see how the Caesar salad continues to be popular among Americans and remains an influence in Mexican cuisine.
