Muscle Milk Gets FDA Warning

August 22, 2011

CytoSport Inc., the company that makes Muscle Milk, got a warning letter from the Food and Drug Administration in July due to the dairy reference in its alliterative name. Although the Muscle Milk label indicates that the sports drink doesn't actually contain milk, the FDA says that its name is misleading nevertheless.

The FDA gave CytoSport 15 days to address the mislabeling issues outlined in its warning letter, which could entail a label change or perhaps even a rebranding of the product. For its part, CytoSport released a statement on its website that reads, in part, "The FDA's inquiry is specifically about the use of the word 'milk' in the name Muscle Milk and whether the use of that term is appropriate. CytoSport is working with the FDA to ensure that we address the FDA's concerns."
