The UN Advises the World to Start Eating Bugs

May 18, 2013

The United Nations has devised a new plan for dealing with world hunger and malnutrition. They've advised the world to start eating insects. The Food and Agriculture Organization said insects like grasshoppers and ants would make great additions to people's diets.

In a 200-page report, the UN says 2 billion people around the world have already begun adding insects to their diets, citing benefits like protein and minerals. The report also talks about the environmental benefits of a diet high in bugs, saying insects are much more efficient when converting them into an edible meat. Furthermore, producing insects as food would use much less greenhouse gases and will produce less waste.

"Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly," the report reads. The Food and Agriculture Organization also compared the meat quality of insects to that of meat and fish, saying they are "particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children."

Would you consider adding insects to your diet?
