Every year, around the end of August, the Spanish town of Bunol becomes a sea of red. The tiny town was transformed yesterday as more than 40,000 people, some from as far away as Japan or Australia, participated in the hour-long fight. More than 120 tons of the ripe, red fruit were used on the occasion.
The Tomatina began as a food fight between two young men in 1945 in Bunol and the police broke it up. It continued unofficially until 1959, when it was finally officially sanctioned.
