Homemade Angry Birds Bento Box

January 12, 2012

Bento boxes are the Japanese version of a packed lunch.  This is a great activity to do with the kids and for the kids.  This Angry Birds themed bento consists of onigiri (rice ball), corn, and teriyaki chicken.  Send your kids to school with an Angry Birds bento and they will be the talk of the cafeteria.

Angry Birds Bento Box

Ingredients:

1/2 cup cooked rice
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
A few strips of teriyaki chicken (get the readymade ones)
Nori sheet
Carrot (thumb sized portion)

Directions:

Blanched the frozen vegetables and sweet corn in boiling water for a few minutes. Remove, drain well and set aside.

Reheat the frozen teriyaki chicken in a toaster while you prepare the rice balls.

Scoop about 1½ tablespoons of cooked rice in a bowl and add in ¾ teaspoon or more tomato sauce and mix till combined.

Placing a sheet of cling wrap on hand, scope about 1 tablespoon of tomato rice onto the cling wrap and shape rice into an oval rice ball. Set aside.

Using another sheet of cling wrap, shape 1 teaspoon of cooked rice into a flat oblong shape and join it to the base of the coloured rice to form the base.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 to make another small rice ball.

Assemble the items in the bento box and add the features on the rice ball according to the image below.

For the eyes: use the end of a big straw to cut out circles from a sheet of cheese to make the outline of the eyes. To make the eye balls, use a craft puncher to make small black circles from a nori sheet.

To secure the cheese or carrot on the Angry Birds’ face, use thin spaghetti strips to fix them.

Lastly arrange all the items into the bento box and serve.
