Victoria Justice Applauds Healthy Lunches in LA School District

October 13, 2011

The Unified School District in Los Angeles has just won the grand prize in the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine's 2011 Golden Carrot Awards for encouraging healthy school lunches. The district has been providing cafeteria options that include whole-grains, vegetarian meals, non-dairy options, and plant-based meals.

Actress and singer Victoria Justice, 18, wrote a letter to Unified School District's superintendent, Dr. John E. Deasy, to commend him on his efforts to make school a healthier place. The letter thanks him for providing students with healthy food options and said, as a student herself, she cares about the health of herself and her peers.

Read the entire letter below.

Dear Dr. Deasy,

Thank you for providing students in Los Angeles schools with plenty of fresh, healthy lunch options this year. As a student and actress, I'm proud to be part of a school community that strives to help young people succeed.

Providing students with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy whole grains, and low-fat vegetarian meal options is a great way to help fight childhood obesity and prevent type 2 diabetes.

As a young adult, I care about my health — and the health of our next generation.

I'm excited to join the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in congratulating the Los Angeles Unified School District on its healthy school lunch menu and nutrition education programs.

Thank you for giving every student the opportunity to shine like a star.
