Remember Jamawn Woods and Soul Daddy, the inspirational story turned three-city restaurant chain from NBC's "America's Next Great Restaurant?" What, no? Well, that's because the three restaurants Woods won on the show shut down nearly as quickly as they opened in Los Angeles, New York and Minneapolis.
Woods is taking a second chance at success. He plans to open a restaurant in his hometown of Detroit, thanks to an out-of-court settlement that allows him to keep "the Soul Daddy name, equipment from the New York branch of the restaurant and his recipes."
Woods has no regrets about appearing on the short-lived NBC show. “It gave me a great chance and opportunity to be seen by the world and to promote my food. I want to be a restaurant owner. I’m passionate about what I do. I definitely am thankful for the chance I had to be on TV."
The new Detroit location of Soul Daddy should open next spring. It will retain some of the healthy foods in the original Soul Daddy vision, but will also serve fried chicken.
