The American food industry, throws away a shocking amount of good food every year. The most recent statistics show that 30 million tons of food were dumped in landfills in 2009.
The main reasons for all of this waste are overstocking and cosmetic blemishes. This is really sad, considering that 50 million Americans go hungry each year.
Thankfully, the industry is planning a three-year initiative to reduce waste and this will hopefully lead to more people having access to the food.
Beyond the initiative, there are plenty of others, such as the makers of Dive, who have more immediate solutions to the problem.
