Calm down, everybody. Sure, a few deaths make headlines, but out of about a billion daily U.S. "eating events" we're doing pretty good. Most of the time, you don't get sick, so the system's working fine. At least that's what a new Wall Street Journal article says anyway.
Arguing against even more government regulation and an overall dialing back of industrial farming methods, writer Peter A Coclanis tells us all to relax. Things aren't quite as bad as the news makes them out to be.
"In our much maligned "industrial" food regime, eight people a day, on average, die from ingesting "bad" food—mostly the very old, the very young, and people with severely compromised immune systems," Coclanis writes. "That's about one out of every 39 million Americans."
What do you think? Would you like to increase food safety regulations in the U.S.? Give the article a read and let us know what role you think the U.S. government should serve in food safety?
