One evening, a few weeks ago, I was contemplating a new bottle of Bols Genever, trying to find a new use for it in a cocktail. I started thinking of a New Orleans favorite, the Vieux Carré, a blend of rye whiskey, cognac, sweet vermouth, Benedictine, and two types of bitters.

Sloe gin is an old English tipple, and a 1940 article from Esquire calls it a handsome, maroon-hued gin of tangy charm which is the offspring of mating Old Man Dry and Miss Blackthorn-Berry of the plum family.

It seems in days gone by that drinkers where made of pretty stern stuff, as they would stop into a bar for an ‘eye opener’ to get them back into gear for the day ahead. Sure we still have the trusty Bloody Mary, but it was commonplace once upon a time to have a stiff drink that would shock your system back into shape and get you going, hence the Corpse Reviver.

The Cable Car is a modern classic that has made its rounds on the west coast and in Las Vegas, and once you taste it, the reason becomes apparent.

I love the depth of flavor that this margarita offers; it’s not as fruity as some other flavored margaritas, but it is still refreshing and sweet, and it really brought a ray of sunshine to Kramer and me on a gloomy New York winter day.

In Western culture, the pineapple is a symbol of hospitality. A sign to guests that the house is a welcome place for them. The origins of this practice date back to early colonial America, when fresh pineapples were a luxury item from the Caribbean.

Inspired by the traditional Masala chai tea blend, this cocktail is a fusion of, quite possibly, the three best beverages in the world. This of course being tea, craft beer, and Bourbon.

It’s the national drink of Brazil, made with their national spirit, and it’s internationally awesome. According to some Brazilians, the caipirinha was originally a sort of folk-medicine, used for treating colds and sore throats.

In a health brief your grandmother was right about hot toddies warding off a cold or flu. You can brew up a potent virus fighter by simply stirring the juice of a lemon and honey to taste into a cup of boiling water and 2 tsps. of elderberry syrup.

Meyer lemons aren’t as tart as the regular lemons we’re used to and they look more like oranges. They are also a little bigger than regular lemons. In the U.S., they will be in season until February…so get on it, what are you waiting for?

This cocktail is a variation of that (Ginnifer flowers) martini. Playing around with others’ recipes (as we always do), Spicehubby and I came up with a concoction that is even better

The Boxcar. A classic Sidecar features brandy (or cognac, and we’re sure you know that all cognac is brandy but not all brandy is cognac), Cointreau, and lemon juice. But that nutmeg syrup just begs for brandy, and, with images of boxcars trundling north through the swamps of central Florida piled high with citrus, we felt that fresh oranges were a natural complement.

Taco night doesn’t have to pose the following dilemma: Sangria or margaritas? Now you don’t have to choose.

If I’d said it was spinach and blueberries you would have laughed yourself out of your chair (and those Twilight bunny slippers). You’ll never even notice the spinach.

One of the things I love about winter (yes, there are things I love about winter) is the many varieties of citrus that find their way into supermarkets. Last week it was blood orange, today I found these lovely satsuma mandarins.

When you think of smoothies, the usual suspects come to mind: strawberry, banana-peanut butter, chocolate, blueberry, etc. Yesterday, I spied 1/2 cup of leftover pumpkin puree in my 'fridge and decided to do a deconstructed pumpkin pie, smoothie, sans crust.

Today’s cocktail recipe is a fancy version of a gin sour, but with the botanical addition of lavender. Lavender can be a great addition to a cocktail; it’s flowery but also has an earthy flavor that can nicely complement gin or other spirits.

Our woods are filled with plump deep blue sloe (blackthorn) berries, prugnole (or in local dialect brugnole). With stained sticky fingers, I gather them just in the nick of time during the late fall, waiting for them to be soft but not mealy and more importantly before the other booze makers can get to them!

There are plenty of choices out there; probably more than you can handle. For many, it is difficult to choose a wine off the shelf at your local store. If I spend less than $15, am I going to get a bad wine? Not sure! On the other hand, you might be spending $25 on something you could've spend $12 on! Use our Top 15 Wines Under $15 to guide you!

Grapefruit, lime and ginger is not a combination I would have thought of without the help of Rose Bakery. This simple idea packs a punch, it is so bright and fresh. For a real treat, put the pitcher of juice in the freezer for about an hour before you plan on serving it.

Our fun punch recipe is based on Zay’s tita’s recipe… reverse engineered, and with our own little twists. That’s kind of the fun of it though – there’s no real way you can mess it up! As long as you keep topping it up with ice and juice (and booze) all night, it’ll be good to go. As we say… all roads lead to fun punch!

I don’t necessarily think that New Years means that you HAVE to immediately start dieting, but I feel like it is a good time to start out fresh. I like to refine my eating and exercising habits after the holiday bingeing is over.

You’ll scarcely credit this, but I stood there with my hand on that bloody stone, and wanted nothing more than that it should open, and put me face-to-face with James Fraser. Whoever he was, whenever he was, I wanted nothing more in life than to see him — and to kill him.

Our friends Hilary and Jeremy, inspired by Gertrude Stein’s famous Parisian artist salons, hosted a dinner where everyone had to stand up and do a turn, talk about their latest play or project, test run a new song, and generally be creative and fun.

Hi all! So we wanted to end the week on a good note so of course a cocktail of sorts needed to be involved. So for the longest time I considered the classic ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktail to be an “old man” drink

One thing I don't think I talk about enough here are my workouts. I love my workouts! Okay maybe there are a few slurs during, but afterward I feel amazing. A good challenge can always make you feel better.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season! Filled with love and laughter. It's been awhile! I thought maybe I could get away with not mentioning our lack of posts...and maybe we can...but I think we owe you an apology. So we're sorry for the meager attempt at posting lately.

I realized during the holidays I was drinking three cups of coffee a day along with almost a half cup of half & half. That’s a lot of calories and fat. Did I really need it? Not to mention the cost. Coffee is slowly creeping up there in price along with cream. Maybe I’ll kill two birds with one stone?

From your love life to hot chocolate, a little spiciness makes everything better. The Aztecs new this; they were the inventors of a spicy chocolate drink called xocoatl. Rather than sweeten their chocolate with sugar, they added fiery chilies for a spicy and bitter drink.
