Recipes don't call for baking powder, but I cheat and give it a helping hand to rise! Various brown bread recipes have different quantities of white flour in them, all a matter of preference. You don't even need white flour. The type of wholemeal flour affects the taxture of the bread. The quantities I use can be put in to two 1lb tins and baked. If the bread ends up not really being properly cooked then you can toast it and my kids love toasted brown bread.
