Homemade Coffee Liqueur

Make some dark, dark, dark coffee... really strong.

Now reduce it over VERY low heat for 6 hours, or until its volume is reduced to 50%. DO NOT BURN the coffee.

Add the sugar while still on low heat. Stir for 10 minutes.

Cut up the Vanilla Bean into 7 or 8 pieces and add to mixture.

Let cool.

Add Vodka.

Place mixture into a bottle and let sit for 4 weeks, turning occasionally.

Strain out the big bits.

Filter out any remaining sludge with a coffee filter (optional).

Generally speaking, when you see a Coffee Liqueur recipe on the net it starts with coffee crystals... Yuck. While I haven't tried these recipes (just on principle) I have managed to make a delicious Kahlua without Crystals. Total prep time is short. But boiling it down will take most of the day. Then you have to wait 4 weeks (but I didn't). It actually tastes better the longer you wait.
