Thousands of fans flocked to Coney Island over the Fourth of July weekend to soak up some sun and enjoy the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, but many are miffed by the cash-strapped city's latest money-saving initiative: toilet paper rations. Instead of placing toilet paper rolls in each women's bathroom stall, Parks Department employees handed out a few squares to each entering woman.
The New York Post visited the Coney Island boardwalk last week and saw Parks Department employees asking beachgoers to form a line to hand out toilet paper. "Never in my life have I experienced anything like this," said Regina Ballone of Brooklyn, who was one of the individuals in line. The Post also wrote that each time a male reporter entered the men's bathrooms, there was no toilet paper whatsoever to be found.
The Parks Department denied the existence of toilet paper rations. "There's no need to ration, and we'll make certain our staff does not do so," said Meghan Lalor, a representative for the department.
