FDA Warning: Don't Feed SimplyThick to Babies, Linked to Deaths

May 23, 2011

Stop using SimplyThick food thickener. The FDA says the food thickener, which is used primarily in breast milk fed to premature babies to help with swallowing, has been linked to a life threatening intesinal disorder that has already killed two infants.

The FDA is investigating 15 cases of necrotizing enterocolitis, which causes potentially fatal intestinal inflamation, from four medical centers.

SimplyThick is most often given to premature babies who are still in the hospital, but the food thickener is also given to older patients who have trouble swallowing.
