Would You Pay More for Safer Food?

May 22, 2011

If you answered "yes" you're in good company. A new poll says 66 percent of likely voters said they support additional funding for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and 74 percent don't object to the projected one to three percent increase in food prices attributed to the recently passed FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.

The poll, which was conducted by The Pew Charitable Trusts opposes many commonly held beliefs about American consumers. Maybe Americans are less concerned about cheap, convenient food and more concerned with health than previously thought?

Twenty-five percent of respondents "worry a great deal" about food contamination and a whopping 85 percent believe the federal government is responsible for the safety of the U.S. food supply.

What do you think? Would you pay more for food to pay for closer government oversight?
