Mark Zuckerberg Now Kills His Own Dinner

May 26, 2011

He literally kills it himself. On May 4th, the founder of Facebook posted a note on his private profile. "I just killed a pig and a goat," it read. His 847 friends reacted with a wide range of emotions, prompting Mark Zuckerberg to explain that he embraces a new "personal challenge" each year. In 2009, he wore a different tie each day. In 2010, he learned Mandarian.

This year the challenge is meat. A prominent Silicon Valley chef named Jesse Cool lives by Zuckerberg and has been advising him on his journey. She introduced him to local farmers and helped him as he killed his first chicken, pig and goat (not all at once). A local butcher then completed the breakdown of the animal, and Zuckerberg prepared a meal from it.

Zuckerberg further explained his thinking in an e-mail to Fortune magazine: "A bunch of people told me that even though they loved eating pork, they really didn't want to think about the fact that the pig used to be alive. That just seemed irresponsible to me. I don't have an issue with anything people choose to eat, but I do think they should take responsibility and be thankful for what they eat rather than trying to ignore where it came from."

As part of the process, the Facebook founder attempts to use as much of the animals as possible. He has eaten the heart and liver of a chicken, and used the feet to make stock. Most of the time, though, he keeps to the vegetarian lifestyle.

What do you think of this latest move?

I raised, killed and butchered a veal calf in high school, all in a humane way. Meat doesn't grow in plastic packages. I think anything we can do to get closer to the sources of our food is a good thing!

Barnaby, that's really impressive and an admirable way to think about our food. I agree, the more aware of where our meals come from, the better off we are in so many ways.

Usually don't agree with your ideas BUT This makes perfect sense, now get them to take responsibility for other acts instead of looking for the loophole to pass the Buck. I was raised that a mans word was his bond. Getting ready to leave this earth soon and don't like to say it but US is going to hell and I cry for this.
