I remember exactly where I was that day. We had an office over the store at our greenhouse business, and I was doing some paperwork. The TV was on, playing the Today Show. I looked up and saw a tower smoking and at first thought it was an awful joke. Matt and Katie kept talking and the video feed kept playing while they spoke to one another, neither one of them really having much to say, but having to fill the airspace. I was staring at the TV as the second plane hit. It was the most surreal experience I have ever had in my life.
It changed our lives forever.
Our greenhouse/nursery business never recovered. My wedding 4 days later was practically unattended. Living in New York, everyone was downstate trying to help out in the city. Friends from far away wouldn't travel (it wasn't recommended anyway) and walking from our home on the property to the store was terrifying. It felt as if we were in danger all the time.
Remembering that day is so painful for me and millions of other Americans. It helps to talk about what we were doing *right then,* and to have our own little moments that help us get through the remembering. For some people, it's shown in special things they cook. We have gathered a few recipes that all focus on remembering and in a small way, celebrating the lives that were, mourning the lives that aren't, and giving a bit of comfort to those of us who are still here.
