Kraft Foods, an icon in the boxed mac and cheese industry, says it plans to remove artificial food coloring from some products intended for children. The dyes will be replaced with natural colors from paprika, annatto and turmeric spices.
Kraft has been "working on this relaunch for quite some time," according to company spokesperson Lynne Galia, as part of an overall shift toward healthier recipes.
The company will continue to use artificially colored processed cheese in its original plain mac and cheese with elbow-shaped noodles. The changes are intended only for products marketed to children, like the Spongebob Squarepants, Halloween and winter shapes.
