Retro Recipes: Tater Tot Casserole

The tater tot was introduced to Americans in the early 1950's and since then has remained a popular item, especially among kids.  Tater tot casserole came about later as a way to showcase the tot's versatility instead of it simply being a side.  This dish is transported from the stovetop to the oven.  Ground beef is cooked with onion before being layered with cream of mushroom soup and green beans.  The tater tots top the casserole and are cooked until crisp and golden brown.  Tater tot casserole is sure to become a hit with your kids.

Tater Tot Casserole

Ingredients:

2 lbs. hamburger
1 med. onion
1 can golden Campbell's mushroom soup
2 cans French style green beans
1 sm. can fried onion rings
2 pounds frozen tater tots
1/2 can milk

Directions:
 
Fry hamburger and onion together; drain well. Mix together with green beans and soup (mix with 1/2 can milk). Put in casserole dish or pan. Crumble fried onion rings over top. Cover with tater tots and bake according to tater tot directions in 11x13 inch cake pan full.
