Burger King Pulls Mary J. Blige Commercial

April 4, 2012

After Burger King released a new ad online starring Mary J. Blige the Internet blew up with criticism and claims that the advertisement drew on African-American stereotypes to sell their new crispy chicken wrap. Mary J. Blige herself said she never signed-off on the particular commercial that was released online.

"I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence. Unfortunately, that's not what was happening in that clip," Blige said. "I understand my fans being upset by what they saw. But, if you're a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw go out."

Burger King has since pulled the ad from their YouTube channel, but say it was because of music licensing issues.

Reps for the fast-food restaurant said the ad was released "before all the licensing and final approvals were obtained. We would like to apologize to Mary J. and all of her fans for airing an ad that was not final."

Burger King added that a final version of the ad will be released soon.
