HFCS now at Whole Foods Market - UPDATE!

December 12, 2011

It's a sad state of affairs when you can walk into a Whole Foods Market and be offered a sample of crab cakes containing high fructose corn syrup (HFCS)!

The crab cakes in question were gluten free and the smiling demo man said "take some home today, they are delicious". Considering, that gluten free does not always mean healthy, I read the label and was stunned to see HFCS as an ingredient.

I am all too aware that Whole Foods continues to sell genetically modified ingredients such as soy lecithin, maltodextrin, glucose syrup, beet sugar, and so on, but I never imagined that they would be so blatant as to accept products containing HFCS. Even worse, their standards page includes the statements, "We are committed to foods that are fresh, wholesome and safe to eat", and "We provide food and nutritional products that support health and well-being".

This chain was once a passionate advocate for organic standards and they clearly have the money and power to make a difference, but they have chosen to just be another corporation, caring about nothing but the bottom line.

Supporting local farmers and markets is one of the best ways to vote with your dollars and send a message that we the consumers do care about what ingredients are in our food supply and we will not accept such deception from a once great store.
