A 30-year-old Chinese restaurant in Doncaster, South Yorkshire has seen a 20 percent decline in business and may be forced to close after an Internet rumor spread throughout the community that the restaurant was serving dog meat.
According to the rumor, a woman diner choked to death on a dog's identification tag while eating at the China Rose. The rumor further alleged that the restaurant had some arrangement to dispose of former racing greyhound dogs.
"Some people might think it is funny but it is really offensive to us and it is devastating to the business," said Eugene Chee, the manager. "The idea that Chinese restaurants sell dog meat is absolute rubbish and it is racist."
Authorities have not received any complaints about the restaurant, but are aware of the rumor.
