Peanut butter is a staple for many households across the US. It is a quick and easy protein source for many picky children, and a go to food for struggling college students. The idea that peanut butter is a cheap source of protein is about to change.
According to Shelly Nutt, Executive Director of the Texas Peanut Producers,
I think that by December that everything related to peanuts and peanut butter is going to see an increase in price because there's just not the peanuts out there to fill the demand.
The problem is, peanut farmers face multiple issues: competition for farmland, from cotton farmers, drought, basic costs of operation, are all contributing factors to the increase in price.
Jif, a major peanut butter producer, has announced a price increase of 30 percent is coming in November.
Right now, if you depend on peanut butter to feed your family, now is the time to stock up. Buy an extra jar each time you shop, and don't forget to check for coupons!
