7 Reasons Dad Needs a Beer

June 13, 2011

In honor of Father's Day, let's take a look at some healthy eating strategies, just for the gents, straight from the American Dietetic Association. First, Daddy needs a beer. No, really. He needs it. Check out these seven very good health reasons to celebrate this Father's Day with your favorite dude and a cold brew. You had no idea you were such a health nut, did you?

1. It's Heart Smart

One to two drinks a day has been found to make blood less "sticky" and therefore less prone to clogs that lead to heart disease.

2. You Can Keep it Light

Light beers only have about 100 calories per 12-ounce serving, so it's not terribly fattening and then there's something about light beer having increased ammounts of ethanol, which cuts both calories and carbs. Not sure if the ethanol sounds that healthy, but let's not dwell on the negative here.

3. It's Kind to Your Kidneys

Beer cuts your risk of kidney stones. Both because of the increased...ahem..bathroom action required after drinking beer, and the effects of the hops on calcium production.

4. It's a Surprising Source of Fiber

See you in hell Metamucil! A 12-ounce bottle of lager sports 0.75 grams of fiber while the same amount of dark beer boasts 1.3 grams.

5. It's Rich in B Vitamins

One 12-ounce brewski supplies three percent of the B12 and 12.5 percent of the vitamin B6 you need in a day.

6. It Strengthens Your Skeleton

Beer is rich in silicon, an element found in few foods and drinks, which has been linked to stronger bones.

7. It's Perfectly Packaged

Because beer comes neatly pre-measured in its own bottle or can, you'll know when to say when. For the biggest health benefits drink no more than one to two beers a day.
