Slow Cooked Applesauce

Ingredients

5 apples from a local tree if possible
1 cup water (more if necessary)
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Preparation

1
Peel and core apples. Thinly slice and rough chop them. Add them to a medium-to large pot over medium-high heat on the stove. Add water and stir. Once the water starts to simmer, reduce heat to med-low and stir. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and salt and stir. Cook over medium low heat for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. Depending on how you like the consistency of your applesauce, cook another hour for softer sauce.

Melissa, this is a great recipe and one that's very similar to mine, I may add a pinch of ground cloves and a shot of calvados if I'm feeling fancy. The one thing I do like to do is add more chopped apples to the sauce over a day or two period and then the sauce is creamy and chunky thanks to less-cooked cooked apples that find their way into the pot before canning.

Thanks Tom! I love the idea of cloves and calvados- that is exactly what I am going to do with my next batch. I really appreciate the tip!!
