The Fukushima Plate by Nils Ferber plays on the ongoing frenzy about radiation exposure following the catastrophic natural disasters that struck Japan in March. This tech-savvy ceramic dish detects and displays radioactivity using three embedded OLED rings. The battery-powered radioactive meter detaches for washing and can be customized with user-programmed limiting values.
When the Fukushima Plate does not detect radiation in its vicinity, the OLED lights remain off, and the plate looks just like any other ceramic dish. "Slightly increased" levels of radiation will trigger one ring to illuminate, while "significantly increased" levels of radiation will cause two rings to light up. The third ring glows red, indicating that the dish is too radioactive to consume.
