Wake Up Your Valentine With Chocolate Donuts

February 13, 2016

Donuts are one of my favorite breakfast foods to make. I like to get up earlier than the rest of the family and wake them when the sweet smell of homemade donuts wafts up the stairs. Now that it's Valentine's Day, of course my donuts are going to be made from chocolate.

I like to shake my hot donuts in powered coco mix (the actual sweetened cocoa you buy) instead of powdered sugar. It's just another layer of sweet chocolate to the recipe. Check out this recipe . If you don't already have baking cocoa , try to get the best you can find. I am partial to the Dark Cocoa from Hershey's right now. It's wickedly chocolate flavored, and just perfect for baking.

Here is the recipe:

Homemade Chocolate Donuts:

2 cup milk (scalded)
1/2 cup potato flakes
1/2 cup shortening (shortening-cut into the flour)
4 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 Tbsp yeast (dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water- water is warm enough when you can hold your fingers under hot tap without pulling them away)
5 whole eggs
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup dark chocolate baking cocoa

Preparation

Mix scalded milk with potato flakes; cool to room temperature.
In separate bowl, cut shortening into the flour.
To the potato flakes mixture, add sugar, yeast mixture, eggs, salt, flour mixture, and cocoa.
Beat for 10 minutes.
Let rise 15-30 minutes.
Roll out dough and form into doughnut shapes.
Fry in deep fat fryer at 375 degrees until golden brown.
