Chocolate Heart Linzer Cookies and Other Homemade Chocolate Cookies for Valentine's Day

February 2, 2015

Valentine's Day and chocolate go hand in hand.  If you normally buy that special someone in your life a box of chocolates, a homemade box of chocolate cookies is an even better way to show them you care.  Any one of these cookie recipes will appeal to a chocoholic, whether they love cookies with texture like the chocolate oatmeal scotchies or crave the balance between sweet and salty such as salted chocolate rye cookies.  I am a firm believer that homemade gifts are the best gifts and anyone would be thrilled to receive a curated box of cookies, made especially for them.

Cream Cheese Chocolate Chip Cookies
Recipe from Averie Cooks

Cream cheese chocolate chip cookies are thick, decadent, and delicious.  Unlike traditional chocolate chip cookie dough, this dough needs to chill before the cookies can be scooped and baked.  But, your patience will be rewarded with the best cookies your teeth ever had the priveldge to sink into.

Salted Chocolate Rye Cookies
Recipe from Tartine No. 3

Whole-grain dark rye flour replaces traditional all purpose flour to create a more healthful and flavorful cookie.  Rye's natural nutty flavor compliments the bitter notes found in chocolate.  The dash of sea salt adds balance to the cookie while also highlighting the other tastes on the palette.

Lava Cookies
Recipe from Jen's Favorite Cookies

If you are a fan of flourless chocolate cake, then you are going to be head over heels for these decadent lava cookies.  Hot fudge is tucked in the middle of the dough and as the cookie bakes, the sauce melts and spreads.  When you bite into one of these lava cookies, you are essentially eating a spoonful of warm hot fudge.

Chocolate Oatmeal Scotchies
Recipe from Sunny Side Ups

Chocolate oatmeal scotchies is the perfect combination between an oatmeal cookie and a chocolate chip cookie.  A buttery chocolate cookie dough is studded with old fashioned oats and butterscotch chips.  You can certainly substitute the butterscotch chips with another flavored chips such as dark chocolate or white chips, depending on what you have available in the pantry.

Chocolate Heart Linzer Cookies
Recipe from Keeping with the Times

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, a heart shaped cookie must be included in this recipe round up.  Classic linzer cookies are filled with jam but this version opts for homemade chocolate hazelnut spread instead.  I mean, chocolate on chocolate is never a bad idea.
