Create Your Own Spooky Halloween Bento

October 10, 2014

A traditional Japanese bento box is a packed meal usually containing rice, some form of meat or fish, and vegetables.  Decorated bentos, like this spooky Halloween one, are targeted towards kids.  In the early school years, most schools do not have a lunch program so children are required to bring their own food.  Mothers, and sometimes Fathers, spend a significant amount of time crafting intricate bentos to encourage their picky eaters to eat their lunch.  Making bentos are also an exercise in creativity.  For example, a straightforward square peanut butter and jelly sandwich can be turned into a cute panda bear, bunny rabbit or kitten, just to name a few.

Bento boxes are becoming popular in countries outside Japan.  They are a fun way to change up your child's school lunch routine.  A Halloween inspired bento box is a themed meal that your kids will absolutely love (as well as all the other kids at the lunch table).  A cheese castle, an egg white ghost and pumpkin shaped carrots disguise the white rice and beef curry below.  While a little time consuming, creating this festive bento box is definitely worth the effort.
