First of all, let me just say that if a magical genie emerged from a lamp and granted me three wishes, I would most certainly use one to request that I am never again asked “How do you get enough protein?” While I understand that this seems like a reasonable enough question, it constantly reminds me that nutrition education is sorely lacking and most individuals equate protein with meat and meat alone and this is simply not the case. In an effort to make that wish a reality, allow me to shed some light on the situation!
Protein is absolutely a necessary component of a healthy, well-balanced diet. However, as with most things in life, it is better in moderation. The truth is, many Americans are getting too much protein - not too little! - leading to various issues including heart problems, obesity and perhaps even certain types of cancer. Think about it: when was the last time you heard one of your friends being treated for a protein deficiency?
Then there is the concern with “complete proteins”, or proteins which contain all of the essential amino acids. Meats are one source of complete proteins, whereas most plant foods may have a variety of amino acids but not all of them. However, the "complete protein" model can be misleading. There is no need to get all of your amino acids from one food or even at one meal. You can “mix and match” by making sure you are eating a balanced diet of beans, seeds & nuts, and colorful vegetables. Personally, I have never sat down to plan out my amino acid intake and it has never been an issue. In fact, if you are adding more protein to your plate, you are making room by giving veggies and grains the boot. This in turn sets you up for health issues far more common and troubling than the ones caused by showing that juicy steak to the door.
