The UN says that about one-third of all food produced annually for humans is lost due to production and consumer waste, 1.3 billon tons each year.
Not surprisingly, the losses impact those in poverty and developing nations more directly than the rest of us.
The most egregious waste comes from rich countries where retailers throw out food simply because it looks unappealing.
