Food service companies like Aramark, Sodexo and Compass Group are required by the USDA to operate as a non-profit. But questions have been raised about how willing companies like these have been to pass huge rebate savings from the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program onto the school districts they serve.

The USDA will begin an audit of the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs in August to get to the bottom of the matter.
Food service companies have run these kinds of scams before. In 2010, Sodexo in New York settled for $20 million after it was accused of withholding rebates and overcharging the school system for food service.
